I was thinking about lists that would lack the mighty Tervigon. The first one that came to mind was Warrior spam.

Think about 4 units of 9 warriors. Comes in at 1080pts without upgrades. But that’s 36, 3 wound models. upgrade to taste. Think it would work?

How do you deal with Space Wolves?

Also I am going to be heading back to my hometown, Ottawa and my old gaming group.

Any suggestions for dealing with the new Space Wolves? I haven’t faced them yet and I know my old (WAAC) buddy is fielding them.

    Heavy Support Dilemma

I would like to discuss something that has been bugging me the last few weeks. That is the three Heavy Support slots.

When the new Codex first came out I did what most did and jumped onto the Trygon, Mawloc bandwagon. But once I took a deeper look at the rules and how these particular choices would play out I quickly decided that spamming them wouldn’t work for me.

So I had three open Heavy Support slots and a number of effective units to pick from. This is what it boiled down to for me.

The Trygon(Prime): I originally wanted this model in my list for the subterranean assault. The idea of Horamguants swarming out of reserve in my opponents back field was incredible. But as I thought about it, this plan really wasn’t going to work consistently. Reserve rolls would probably mess everything up. For instance having my Hormaguants coming out of reserve before my Trygon. Still regardless of this set back the Trygon is still an incredible choice. It can hold its own in Close Combat. It has the option of being a synapse creature.  It can deepstrike and fleet. Therefore it is one of my top choices.

The Mawloc: Its cheaper than a Trygon. It can hit and run, burrow and has a deepstriking large blast. Awesome. It is the biggest distraction in the Tyranid Army. The Problem is it loses so much for being 3o points cheaper. It loses re-rolling its attacks. It’s weapons skill and attacks are dropped to 3. It loses fleet and 6 strength 5 shots. Finally it lacks the option of being a synapse creature.  Personally it just doesn’t seem worth it to me.

The Biovore: I love this unit and plan on testing them out as soon as possible. Being able to launch 3 strength 4 large blast templates 48 inches down the table for cheap seems like a must have. But when taken in perspective to the rest of the Tyranid army. Do many of our armies lack Anti-infantry prowess? I know mine wont.

The problem with the Biovore, has nothing to do this the model itself but rather that it is out competed by the plethora of troop choices, fast attack choices, and elite choices that are just as capable at killing the lowly infantryman. So I find myself asking why waste a heavy support slot on something any other slot can handle just as well, if not better.

The Carnifex: Many people believe the Carnifex’s glory days are over. I beg to differ. Yes it is more expensive than your old ninjafex or dakkafex. But it is still the only monstrous creature in the whole list with strength 9. You can take it in a brood of three. As well it can be equipped to fire 12 strength 6 twin linked shot up to 18 inches away. So it still has a lot going for it. The trick is to keep the Carnifex cheap, because if you have a couple in a brood. It adds up quick. I know I’m going to field test a large brood of these just to see how they handle spearheading my main assault.

The Tyrannofex: Okay I have to be honest. When I first saw this thing I instantly thought it was an over priced laugh of a monstrous creature. But again I was surprised when i took a closer look. Yes it does come with a big price tag but the most important thing to realise when looking at the Tyrannofex is that it fills a major hole in the Tyranid list. Long Range Anti Tank. 2 strength 10 shots at 48 inches and that can be fired on the move. Yes please! Alright ballistic skill 3 is kinda a draw back. but things need to be balanced. Imagine a Ballistic skill 4, strength 10 assault 2 gun on a 6 wound monstrous creature, and tell me you don’t instantly think ‘over powered’. never the less this model brings something incredibly valuable to the swam. On top of that, it also has the option for a large blast template and heavy flamer. In my opinion, the Tyrannofex would excel at backing up a Tervigon on an objective, as it reaches out and hits advancing armour. I am definitely going to convert a few of these up, and see myself using them extensively.

In summary, when it comes to Tyranid Heavy Support I give the Tyrannofex, Trygon and even the Carnifex the nod (in that order as well).

So I am probably going to run Two Tyrannofexes and a Trygon first and see how that works out. I’ll let you all know how it goes.

    Introductions

Hello and Welcome to the Brood.

This is my personal Warhammer 40k Tyranid Blog. Here I am hoping we will all discuss the finer points to the Tyranid Army in all its glorious aspects. From tactics, painting, news and rumors, Army lists and battle reports.

As for myself, I’ve been playing Warhammer 40k for almost a decade up in the Great White North (Canada). I’ve drifted from army to army over the years, but I have always had my eyes on Tyranids. I finally bit the bullet with the new codex and started them recently.

I’ll be posting pictures of my latest models as soon as I get my hands on a decent camera. So if you would like to follow me on  the path laid out to me by the gestalt Hivemind. Then by all means, I’d enjoy the company.

    Again welcome to the Brood,
